Bisi Bele Bath

Bisi bele bath is a dish made mainly in the southern parts of  India. It is a rice-based dish made with tamarind pulp, dal and some vegetables. This recipe takes a lot of time in preparation, but of course it tastes good. The quantities specified in this recipe are meant for 7 people. 
To prepare this dish we have to make Bisi bele bath masala powder.

Ingredients:

Rice – 1cup
Toor dal/Red gram -1/2cup
Carrots-50 grms
Beans-50 grms
Potato-50grms
Raw Banana-50 grms
Onions-50grms
Green chillies-2
Thick Tamarind pulp-11/2cup
Salt- to taste
Oil-3tbsp
Ghee-3tbsp
Mustard seeds-1tsp
Bengal gram-1tsp
Red chillies-2
Bisi bele bath masala-3tbsp

Ingredients for bisi bele bath masala powder:

Coriander seeds- 1tbsp
Bengal gram-1/2tbsp
Red chillies-5 or 6
Poppy seeds-1/2tbsp
Cloves-5 or 6
Cinnamon-3-1inch pieces
Dry coconut-1 small (grated)
Caper fruit (Marati Mogga in telugu)-1 

Procedure:


Roast all of them except dry coconut. Roast dry coconut separately and grind them to a fine powder. Use this powder to prepare bisi bele bath. 

Preparation:

Peel the skin and cut carrots into blocks.
Peel the skin and cut potatoes into blocks.
Make onions into four parts.
Cut beans into two inches each.
Slit green chillies.
Make bisi bele bath powder.

Procedure:

Pressure cook rice with 1:2 ratio.
Pressure cook dal.

Pressure cook carrots, potatoes, raw banana and beans.

We can pressure cook them in separate vessels.
In a thick bottomed pan pour oil add mustard seeds, bengal gram and red chillies. Once they started pop up add green chillies, onions and pour little water. Allow them to boil. Once onions are cooked add tamarind pulp to it. Allow it to boil. Add cooked vegetables to the onions. Add salt and bisi bele bath masala powder.  When they are boiling add cooked dal. Again allow it to boil. Now add cooked rice to it. Again allow it to boil but don’t boil too much.Remove from the fire. Now add ghee and a little oil. Serve hot and also serve roasted papad with this dish. This should be in a slightly semisolid consistency than the normal rice recipes.
